Cafe de Casa

This is a good place to start.

Cafe de Casa is the best Brazilian restaurant in the Bay Area, which makes it my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area.

This restaurant, really just a small room with a lunch counter, captures the food I ate for the year and a half that I lived in Brazil in my early twenties. Chicken, beef, rice, beans, salad.

It's not a meat-on-swords churrascaria. Those are wonderful, and there are several of those in the Bay Area. But Brazilians, like Americans, only visit churrascarias on special occassions. Cafe de Casa captures the food Brazilians eat every day.

The salgados (savory pastries) are a specialty here, especially the variety. If you've never had a coxinha, start with that - it's like the best chicken nugget you've ever had.

Saturdays they cook a feijoada (Brazilian rice and beans with all sorts of meat thrown in), go for that. But call ahead to order. The line will be out the door and, if you order at the counter it'll take half an hour or longer.

I live near the original South San Francisco location and I've not yet visited their new location in San Francisco's Russian Hill neighborhood. I'm confident it's great, too.
